SEMINAR S1 JMA-BE

The city in the landscape – The landscape in the city

Edward Hopper, Portrait of Orleans, 1950

CONTENT

Addressing the current relationship of city and landscape and their mutual permeation has prompted us to examine different theoretical approaches, using the city of Lausanne as concrete example. Global warming and corona have driven home for all of us the tangible usefulness to read the city also as landscape.

TEACHING AIMS

The city of Lausanne – due to its very distinctive topography and the prominent presence of landscape because of the Lac Léman – lends itself exceedingly well to a study of the interaction of city and landscape. Lectures will give insights into various approaches to city and landscape. Analysing the tangible location will enable a critical assessment of the theories.

TEACHING FORMS

The modul is organized as a weekly seminar. Lectures will be held. A boat trip will be organised. Students work in small teams on different approaches to architectural and landscape theory in a concrete part of Lausanne. The teams do their work of analyses during the seminar days and prepare their presentations for the final discussions with guest critics.
