Architecture & Music

Design of a Modular Stage Building System

Study for Metastaseis, Iannis Xenakis, 1953

DESCRIPTION

What is the relationship between music and architecture, and how can it be translated into a modular system for the outdoor stage? The two arts have a lot in common, already Alberti pondered this relationship, and Vitruvius advocated musical knowledge for architects.

Within the course, we will analyze this relationship from different perspectives in theoretical lectures and discussions. This input will serve as the basis for designing a rational modular system for a demountable outdoor stage, `Pavilion of Resonance’, for the Theater Orchestra Biel Solothurn (TOBS). Course participants will work with architects and engineers to solve acoustic and construction challenges. They will be confronted with issues of sustainability, circular economy in construction, craftsmanship and acoustics.

teaching objectifs

Students will understand the various relationships and potential synergies between architecture and music and learn to translate theoretical input into a structural system that is based on logistical, production and assembly constraints. This knowledge will be extremely helpful in their future work experience in the office, where complex ideas must be materialized into practical solutions. During individual coaching sessions with architects and engineers, they will learn detailing and various methods of joining wood. In addition, students will have the opportunity to learn about the current topics of circular economy in construction, the concept of design to disassembly and data-driven design.

FormS of Teaching

Theoretical lectures by specialists in various fields, discussions, design in 2D and 3D, work with physical and digital models, prototyping in 1:1 scale. Coaching will be individually tailored to the project and is designed to help implement the ideas of the participants.
