Seminar S1 JMA-BE

S1 – Reclaiming Venice – How to Redwell the Urban Fabric

Leandro Bassano, La Riva dei Schiavoni a Venezia, Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando

Content

Our theory seminar will be hosted in the medieval Palazzo Trevisan in Zattere and in Il laboratorio Morion -Venice. We will look at the phenomenon that the permanent residents of the Lagoon have been displaced by mass tourism in recent decades. What is the housing situation in Venice today and what is currently being done to create affordable housing that will allow people to feel at home in the lagoon again? We will interact with local bottom-up and participatory initiatives that reactivate vacant buildings and abandoned places, squares and islands.

In the seminar we will tackle the problem and get inspiration by visiting the Architecture Biennale and doing field research in the Sestriere and the lagoon of Venice. We will develop design proposals and concepts to support local initiatives and reclaim the city.
