Designing a Regenerative Earth Pavilion

Deserta Ecofolie by Pedro Ignacio Alonso and Pamela Prado, Venice 2025, Image: Rasmus Hjortshøj

CONTENT

This course explores regenerative architecture through the design of a temporary pavilion for the Swiss Game Hub in Zurich-Oerlikon. Students investigate contemporary earth construction techniques, alongside timber construction, straw bale systems and natural fibre materials. Participants develop a circular, low-impact architectural proposal that responds to the site’s context, user needs and material availability. One project will be selected for completion by craft apprentices from Zurich in summer 2027.

TEACHING AIMS

  • Understanding the principles of regenerative and circular architecture;
  • Evaluating the potential of earth materials in contemporary building practice;
  • Developing an architectural proposal based on local resources, material efficiency and design for disassembly;
  • integrate environmental, functional and constructive aspects into a coherent design concept;

TEACHING METHODS

The course combines short lectures by experts with case studies, a site visit and project-based learning. Students work on a real design challenge while receiving regular feedbacks from the teaching team and invited experts. The course concludes with a final presentation to project partners. The best project will be selected by students and lecturers and brought to life on-site in summer 2027.
